February 1969

As I continue to write/type Dena's diaries, I realize that to an unfamiliar reader, a lot of her words don't make sense. In fact, much of it doesn't make sense to me either. However, I am so enjoying seeing into the life of my grandmother; a woman who cared deeply about her faith, her husband, the kindergarten children she taught each year, and who took the time to do simple things like sewing a dress for me or cooking pumpkin bread on a day that she said to be "taking it easy". This process is giving me a whole new appreciation for the life she led, the love she gave to those around her, and the words she left behind.

100 Year Old Recipe

Enjoying a snowy day at home; relaxing, reading, watching the flakes fall ever so gently. I had a longing for some comfort food...nothing better than my grandmother's banana nut bread recipe from years ago. Thought I would share:

3 ripe Banana's (about 1 Cup)
3/4 Cup Sugar
1/4 Cup Crisco
1 1/2 Cup Flour
2 Eggs
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/8 tsp Salt
1/2 Cup Pecans
1/2 tsp Vanilla

Set oven to bake at 325 degrees.
Mash banana's well and set aside.

Mix sugar, Crisco, eggs, baking soda, salt, and vanilla; mixing well. Add flour, mixing well; then put into well greased muffin pan or bread loaf pan. Bake until gently brown and toothpick comes clean in the center. (About 45 min. depends on your oven)
ENJOY!

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
~ John 15:5

There is a little church on my drive to work each day that speaks to me in a very special way. There are days that the words on the marquee were placed there just for me. This one reminds me of my Dad's favorite saying...Rememeber the word ALL!!!!

The First Entry

So I've thought over the years how I would like to bring back the days of old by publishing my grandmother's diaries. What better way to do that than by adding them to a blog. I'm just getting started and still new to all of this. But I hope this site will be inspirational to many, an interesting retrospective of a day long gone, and hope that our future will be blessed with experiences that only God can provide.

Enjoy!
